The 18-year-old picked up the injury during Chennai’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad (SRH) on April 18. He was seen clutching his left hamstring while attempting a second run and needed on-field medical attention before being helped off by support staff, including Ramakrishna Ghosh and team physio Tommy Simsek. Subsequent scans confirmed the extent of the injury.
His absence is a significant blow for Chennai, who have struggled for consistency this season. The five-time champions lost their first three matches, recovered with two wins, but slipped again in their previous outing.
Mhatre had been Chennai’s leading run-scorer in the tournament so far, registering two half-centuries at an impressive strike rate of 177.87.
The setback adds to Chennai’s injury concerns. Seamer Khaleel Ahmed has already been ruled out, while Nathan Ellis missed the start of the tournament due to injury. Dewald Brevis was also unavailable for the initial matches.
Veteran MS Dhoni has yet to feature this season and could be in contention for selection in the playing XI, subject to fitness.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will next face Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 23 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
