IPL 2026, CSK vs MI Today Match: The availability of MS Dhoni remains uncertain for the Chennai Super Kings’ clash against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, April 23, 2026. Dhoni, who has not featured in any of CSK’s first six matches this season, has been sidelined due to a calf strain sustained during a pre-season training session in Chennai. The 44-year-old has recently been seen training in the nets, where he appeared to be batting fluently and also practicing wicketkeeping, raising hopes of a possible return.

Providing an update on his availability, CSK bowling coach Eric Simmons said a final call will be taken closer to the match. “A decision on him (Dhoni) will be taken tomorrow by him and the medical staff, if he is absolutely ready to go,” he said.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad also confirmed Dhoni is progressing well but stopped short of guaranteeing his return. "We were playing a practice match; that's when he (MS Dhoni) snapped his calf, and then he wasn't able to run as comfortably as he wanted to and I think after that it was just about him seeing some of the youngsters playing in practice games or in match simulations where he felt confident enough about them, who are ready and who have that ability to play in the IPL. And, after that, it was just about taking time on his recovery, and slowly, slowly he's getting there. Never know, maybe next game, maybe after that, but definitely one day for sure," Gaikwad said.

Even if declared fit, Dhoni is unlikely to take on a full workload immediately. He is expected to feature as an Impact Player, allowing CSK to manage his fitness while benefiting from his experience. Wicketkeeping duties have been handled by Sanju Samson in his absence.

CSK have managed a mixed campaign so far, registering two wins from five matches. The team has shown signs of recovery after a poor start but continues to miss the experience and leadership of the former India captain. After bouncing back with wins over Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, CSK slipped again with a loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The team currently placed eighth on the points table, will be keen to have their former captain back as they look to revive their campaign in a crucial fixture.

A final decision on MSD is expected at the toss.
