Despite posting a competitive total of 192 for four, KKR were outplayed by Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century as RCB chased down the target comfortably to hand the former champions their sixth defeat of the season.

The loss left KKR in eighth position on the points table with nine points from 11 matches and a net run rate of -0.198. Although they remain mathematically alive in the playoff race, their qualification chances have become extremely slim.

KKR had entered the match on the back of four consecutive wins and needed victories in all their remaining fixtures to stay firmly in contention for a top-four finish. However, the defeat against RCB has now left Ajinkya Rahane’s side relying heavily on other results.

To remain in contention, KKR must now win all three of their remaining league matches and improve their net run rate significantly. Even then, qualification would depend on several other teams dropping points in the closing stages of the tournament.

KKR can now reach a maximum of 15 points if they win their remaining matches against Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. However, with multiple teams already above or close to that mark, their chances of breaking into the top four appear remote.

The absence of mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy due to injury also proved costly for KKR in the RCB clash. Chakravarthy had formed a strong bowling partnership with Sunil Narine this season and had been among the side’s most consistent performers.

Earlier in the match, young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi scored a composed 71 off 46 balls, while Rinku Singh remained unbeaten on 49 to help KKR post 192 for four.

However, Virat Kohli dominated the chase with an unbeaten 105 as RCB secured a convincing win and climbed to the top of the points table with 16 points.
