The Bangladesh skipper scored 101 runs off 130 deliveries with 12 boundaries and two sixes during his impressive stay at the crease. He maintained a strike rate of 77.69 and counterattacked the Pakistan bowling attack with confidence.
Shanto shared an important partnership with Mominul Haque after the early setbacks and guided Bangladesh past the 200-run mark.
His innings eventually came to an end when he was trapped lbw by Mohammad Abbas shortly after completing his century.
The century was Shanto’s first Test hundred against Pakistan and his ninth overall in the longest format.
At tea on Day 1, Bangladesh were strongly placed at 207/3, with Mominul Haque unbeaten at the crease alongside Mushfiqur Rahim.
For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Abbas and Hasan Ali picked up one wicket each.
