David Johansen, the iconic frontman of the proto-punk band New York Dolls and later known as lounge singer Buster Poindexter, has died at 75 at his New York home, as confirmed by his stepdaughter Leah Hennessey. He was dealing with stage four cancer. As the last surviving member of New York Dolls, Johansen played a pivotal role in shaping punk rock in the early 1970s. He later reinvented himself as Buster Poindexter, achieving fame with the hit song "Hot Hot Hot" and appearances in films like "Scrooged."

Johansen had been struggling with severe health issues, including a damaged back, a brain tumor, and stage four cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2020. He initially kept his illness private but recently spoke about it due to financial difficulties.

In November 2024, he suffered two serious back fractures in an accident, leaving him bedridden despite surgery. His condition deteriorated, prompting him to seek financial help through the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, which established the David Johansen Fund to cover his medical expenses, including nursing care and therapy. To aid his recovery, Sweet Relief also sold a special Johansen T-shirt, with all proceeds directed toward his medical care.
