Washington [US], April 18 : Hollywood actor Sandra Bullock has called on the entertainment industry to embrace artificial intelligence, urging creatives to adapt to its growing influence while remaining cautious about its risks.
Speaking at an event, the Oscar-winning star addressed the rise of AI-generated fan content, including trailers for the upcoming 'Practical Magic 2'.
Reacting with humour, Bullock said, "Well, there could be worse with my image. Sorry," before acknowledging the inevitability of the technology, as per Deadline.
"But it's here. We have to observe it. We have to understand it. We have to lean into it. We have to use it in a really constructive and creative way, make it our friend," she added, as quoted by Deadline.
At the same time, Bullock emphasised the need for vigilance, warning of potential misuse.
"We have to be incredibly cautious and aware of it because there are people who will use it for evil and not good. I do feel that there's a place for it," she said, as quoted by Deadline.
Bullock is set to reunite with Nicole Kidman for 'Practical Magic 2', the sequel to their 1998 romantic fantasy film.
The project recently generated buzz after its trailer debuted at CinemaCon.
Industry voices are echoing similar mixed reactions. Pam Abdy, Co-Chair and CEO of Warner Bros Motion Pictures, acknowledged both the concerns and excitement surrounding fan-made AI videos.
"I know it's not great, but it's also exciting. Because that means that there's a desire for it and that means that people want to come and play with the movie," she said, as quoted by Deadline.
In her latest Instagram post, actor Reese Witherspoon also shared a personal anecdote from a recent meeting with members of her book club, highlighting what she sees as a growing gap in understanding AI tools.
"I said to the 10 of them, 'How many of you guys use AI?' And only three of them used AI. And then I said, 'How many of the three of you feel like you really know what you're doing or they're using it the right way?' And that was only one person," she said.
Reflecting on the interaction, Witherspoon added, "So, if three out of 10 women are the only ones using AI, that means 70 percent of that group is not keeping up. The thing I've learned about technology is if you don't get a little bit of understanding from the very beginning, it just speeds past you. So you have to have little bits of learning just to keep up."
Emphasising the urgency, the actor noted, "Let's get real, our kids are using this every single day." She encouraged followers to "learn the basics together" to "make our everyday lives easier and better," before concluding, "It's time. It's time, people."
The debate over AI's role in Hollywood continues to intensify. As per Deadline, industry body SAG-AFTRA has endorsed the AI policy framework proposed by Donald Trump's administration. The framework calls for legislative measures covering parental controls, intellectual property protection, First Amendment safeguards, workforce development, energy autonomy for data centres, and fewer regulatory barriers to AI innovation.
