The surgeon considers the extent of injury, available tissue, choice of technique, and other key factors when planning the reconstruction procedure. 

The role of a reconstruction surgeon extends to wound care and monitoring for signs of infection or complications such as nerve damage, nonunion or malunion, tissue necrosis, etc. The routine can involve scheduled dressing changes and wound assessment. She shares a patient story, Rita, a 23-year-old, young avid biker who unfortunately met with a mountain biking accident with a compound fracture in her left leg. Preliminary investigation revealed a great deal of bone and tissue damage.
