Watermelon Safety Alert: Mumbai Food Poisoning Case Raises Concerns, Know How to Check Fresh Fruit
Watermelons are a popular and hydrating summer fruit, offering numerous health benefits. However, recent food poisoning incidents, such as the one in Mumbai where four family members died after consuming watermelon preceded by Biryani, have raised concerns about watermelon safety. The family experienced rapid health deterioration, including vomiting, and passed away in the hospital. Investigations are underway to determine if adulterants or toxic chemicals were present in the fruit.
Are Watermelons Artificially Reddened Using Injections?
It is a commonly heard rumor that injections are administered to watermelons to make them appear brighter red and taste sweeter. However, this is not the case in every instance. Nevertheless, one cannot rule out the possibility of adulteration or the use of chemicals in certain parts of the market. Chemicals are often employed to artificially ripen watermelons quickly or to enhance their visual appeal—practices that can pose serious risks to human health. Consequently, consuming such fruit without proper inspection can prove detrimental.
How to Check for Safety?
You can ensure your safety by paying attention to a few small details while purchasing watermelons. First and foremost, if you cut open a watermelon and find it to be excessively bright red or unnaturally uniform in color, exercise caution immediately. Additionally, if the fruit emits a strange odor or tastes different than usual, you should refrain from consuming it. Finally, always make it a point to wash watermelons thoroughly with clean water before consumption. Furthermore, one should avoid purchasing pre-cut watermelon, as there is a risk of bacterial contamination.
– If the part of the watermelon that rested on the ground is creamy-yellow, it indicates that the fruit has ripened naturally. If there is a white spot instead, it may still be unripe.
– If tapping the watermelon lightly with your hand produces a deep, hollow sound, it is a sign of a good-quality fruit.
– If the watermelon feels heavy relative to its size, it contains a higher amount of water and juice.
– If the flesh appears excessively red, has an uneven color, or shows strange cavities, it may have been artificially ripened.
– A naturally ripened watermelon emits a faint, sweet fragrance. If you detect a chemical odor, do not purchase it.

Vigilance is the Best Defense
Experts warn that cases of food poisoning surge significantly during the summer months, as bacteria tend to multiply rapidly during this season. Therefore, one should always consume only fresh and clean fruits. If you experience symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, or dizziness after eating any fruit, consult a doctor immediately. The recent incident in Mumbai serves as a stark reminder that even the slightest act of irresponsibility regarding food and drink can pose a serious threat to one's life.
