Islamabad/Kabul, June 23 Pakistan and Iran have sent aid supplies to Afghanistan in the aftermath of the 6.1-magnitude quake that killed at least 1,000 people in the war-torn nation's Paktika province.

The Prime Minister's Office in Islamabad said in a statement late Wednesday that the relief goods included blankets, tents and medicine, Xinhua news agency.

The aid came on the directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who "showed support to the victims on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan", the Office added.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Embassy in Kabul said that Tehran has sent two cargo planes carrying first aid supplies to Afghanistan.

The Embassy added it has taken other necessary measures to provide assistance to the neighbouring country.

The earthquake on Wednesday, deemed to be the deadliest to strike the country in two decades, and subsequent landslides also injured 1,500 people in the two districts of Gayan and Barmal.

The epicentre was 44 km from Khost city and tremors were felt as far away as Pakistan and India.
