Craving Outside Food but Don’t Want to Gain Weight? Here Are 7 Smart Choices

It is said that gaining weight is the easy job, but when it comes to losing weight it gets difficult. However, losing weight means doesn't necessarily curb our cravings. We make significant changes to our routines incorporating yoga, following specific diets, and altering various eating habits.

Furthermore, we often strive to completely abstain from outside food. Yet, whenever we step out with friends or family, the daunting question arises: "What exactly should I eat?" It becomes incredibly difficult to resist temptation when faced with deep-fried vadas, samosas, or cheese-laden pizzas. However, street food isn't inherently fattening. There are certain street food options that are not only zesty and delicious but also nutritious and low in calories.

By making smart choices, we can enjoy dining out without compromising our diet. Dieting isn't merely about starving oneself or eating bland food; rather, it is about providing the body with the essential nutrients it needs in the right proportions. Opting for street foods rich in protein and fiber helps keep you feeling full for longer periods, thereby preventing unnecessary snacking. We are going to explore seven street food options that can help you manage your weight while allowing you to indulge in a guilt-free culinary experience.

1. Roasted chickpeas are an excellent source of protein. Whether eaten plain—as commonly found on the streets or prepared as Chana Chaat, they make for a fantastic low-calorie snack. Their high fiber content also aids in improving digestion.

2. Boiled peanuts when tossed with chopped coriander, green chilies, and lemon juice—transform into a delicious Peanut Chaat. Peanuts contain healthy fats, which are considered beneficial for heart health.

3. Corn (Kans) is a rich source of complex carbohydrates and dietary fiber. Street-side corn on the cob, roasted over charcoal and seasoned simply with lemon and spices, is infinitely healthier than buttered or cheese popcorn.

4. Many people crave something hot when opting for street food; in such instances, one can enjoy Moong Dal Dhirda (green gram pancakes). Rich in protein and low in oil, this makes for a diet-friendly meal option.

5. If you find yourself craving Chinese food, choose steamed vegetable momos instead of deep-fried dishes. However, while eating them, you should also ensure that the proportion of refined flour (maida) is kept to a minimum.

6. When eating out, the best option is steamed Idli. It is low in fat, and since the accompanying Sambar contains a generous amount of vegetables, it proves to be highly nutritious. One can also opt for Idlis made from puffed sorghum (Jowar Lahya).

7. The best and safest option of all is Fruit Chaat. When consumed without added sugar—seasoned only with spices—it provides the body with essential vitamins and minerals.
