Social media showcases various health trends, including remedies for weight gain, bloating, and excess body fat. Experts often suggest solutions like cumin, lemon, or turmeric water, while many advocate for lukewarm water upon waking, claiming it reduces body fat and promotes weight loss. Though this simple remedy is widely adopted, its effectiveness remains questionable. While drinking hot water is safe and comforting, scientific evidence doesn't conclusively support these weight loss claims.

In reality, the benefits are linked more to the habit of regular water consumption than to the specific temperature of the water itself. The warmth and sense of relaxation provided by hot water may offer some temporary relief to the body. In other words, the true benefit lies in the act of drinking water, not necessarily in the fact that it is hot. Consuming adequate amounts of water helps regulate vital bodily processes such as digestion, blood circulation, kidney function, and blood pressure. Furthermore, some research suggests that insufficient water intake can make it more difficult for the body to cope with daily stress.

Does Hot Water Lead to Weight Loss?

The most common claim is this: Does drinking hot water actually result in weight loss? According to a report published in the journal Obesity, there is currently no concrete scientific evidence to prove that drinking hot water alone leads to weight loss. However, if you choose to replace sugary or high-calorie beverages with water, it can certainly aid in keeping your weight under control. Additionally, some studies suggest that hot water may slightly stimulate bowel movements, which, in turn, could help improve digestion. However, this effect is quite limited and is not directly linked to actual fat loss.

Beneficial for a Sore Throat

When it comes to a sore throat, however, hot water proves to be somewhat more beneficial. Hot fluids soothe the throat, loosen mucus, and reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract. This is precisely why drinking hot tea or herbal decoctions is recommended during a cold or cough.

According to Ayurveda, drinking warm water on an empty stomach activates the body's Jatharagni the digestive fire essential for proper digestion. Since the body rests throughout the night, the digestive system enters a state of dormancy. In this context, gently warm water helps reactivate it, thereby ensuring that the process of food digestion proceeds efficiently. Furthermore, it helps alleviate issues such as gas, constipation, and indigestion. Moreover, drinking warm water also helps balance the Kapha dosha.
