As summer sets in, ants begin invading kitchens and homes. Red ants, in particular, become more active and often crawl into clothes, causing painful bites that can lead to itching and skin rashes. To get rid of them, many people resort to chemical sprays or toxic substances, but these methods can pose health risks, including allergic reactions.

1) Vinegar: Vinegar, a common kitchen staple, is an excellent remedy for driving away red ants. Ants absolutely detest the strong scent of vinegar. The moment they catch a whiff of it, they flee immediately, and other ants following behind them will also retreat out of the house. Mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray this mixture in all the areas where ants are present; this will effectively help to drive them away.

2) Cinnamon: Cinnamon possesses a very strong aroma—one that ants find completely repulsive. Take some cinnamon powder and place it in areas where ants congregate, or sprinkle it along their trails and entry points. Alternatively, soak cotton balls in cinnamon oil and place them in the spots where ants typically enter the house.

3) Lemon Peels: If you do not have vinegar on hand, this offers an affordable and simple alternative. The acidic properties found in lemons help to disrupt the ants' scent trails, causing them to lose their way. Place lemon peels in areas where ant activity is high—specifically in the corners of the kitchen. Ants cannot tolerate the tart scent of lemons, and consequently, their numbers will decrease.

4) Use of Peppermint Oil: Ants have a strong aversion to the intense scent of peppermint. If you place a few mint leaves or some mint oil near the kitchen area or windows, the occurrence of ants will decrease.

5) Talcum Powder: Chalk or talcum powder contains calcium carbonate, which can act as a deterrent to ants. Sprinkling this powder at the entry points where ants appear helps reduce their presence. This powder slows down the ants' movement and prevents their trail from expanding.
