The night of Shab-e-Barat is considered to be one of the holy nights in the religion of Islam. According to Muslim beliefs, the reward of this one night of worship is equal to 83 years. Therefore, Muslims wake up all night and pray to Allah and ask for forgiveness of their sins ahead of the upcoming Ramadan month. Also known as the Night of Blessings, Shab-e-Barat is believed to be the time when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and grants salvation to the souls suffering in hell.

On this night, Muslims visit the cemetery to offer special prayers for their dead ancestors. Many people also donate to the poor and needy. To celebrate the occasion, families cook sweet dishes at home and perform acts of devotion. Many people also fast on this day. However, it is not mandatory to fast on this day, like during the month of Ramadan. But those who want to fast can do so.

The fast of Shab-e-Barat will be observed on 14 February. However, it is not obligatory to fast on this day. But it is said that the Muslim who fasts on this holy day is forgiven for all his sins.
