Under this concept, two people fix a deadline or expiry date of their relationship before starting one. Usually, people date for three to six months, and when their relationship ends, or the expiry date nears, they decide if they want to continue seeing each other or willingly part their ways. No ‘ghosting’ is involved in this, as the couple had decided that if things do not work out by the decided date, they would break up. If you are dating under this clause, then you should be aware of the dating rules too. During the decided term, you are an exclusive couple and cannot cheat or see other people.
Sharing their thoughts about this new term with Lokmat Times, actor Naqiyah Haji said, “There are two ways to look at a sunset clause. In today’s generation, relationships are easier to move on from, and many people enter without clarity. So sunset clause can help reveal someone’s true intentions and how far they see the relationship going. But from my and an old-school perspective, it also shows a hesitation to go all in. If you’re certain about someone, you shouldn’t enter a relationship expecting an expiry date. Despite how modern dating is often portrayed, many of us still believe in old-school love, where you don’t plan the end before fully beginning.”
Speaking with LT Digital Content Creator Ruchika Rajput, said that Gen Z did not invent a new term, but they gave a name to something that existed since the evolution of mankind. She said, “Honestly, Gen Z didn’t invent anything new; we just gave a name to something that’s existed forever, just in a more toxic, unspoken way. People have always walked away when things weren’t aligned, but earlier, it was messy, confusing, and full of mixed signals. Now we’re just calling it what it is. We don’t have the time or emotional bandwidth to create confusion between two people. We’re more straightforward, more self-aware, and more boundary-driven. The Sunset Clause isn’t a trend, it’s just clarity with a label, and Gen Z choosing honesty over emotional chaos.”
Another Content Creator, Aanchal Tiwari, told LT, “I feel like Indian dating already comes with a lot of boundaries- family, age, marriage, career. Because of this, knowing in advance where something might end actually feels better. It protects feelings. It’s kinder than dating someone for a long time and then leaving them with reasons like “gharwale nahi manenge” or “career pe focus karna hai,” things that were always there. When people know what’s coming, they can protect themselves emotionally. It’s more honest, and in many ways, more respectful.”
