In a special drive conducted by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday fined 245 persons for not wearing masks at a restaurant near Breach Candy Hospital and filed a complaint against them in the Gaumdevi police station. An amount of Rs 19,400 was collected as a fine from the violator, aid BMC official. 

Mumbai, on Wednesday reported 2,377 new coronavirus cases. Eight people succumbed to the contagious disease in the city in the last 24 hours, the government data said.

Last week, the city had reported less than 2,000 cases (1,962 on Sunday). The number of cases have surged this week. However, the government has not given any nod for lockdown in the city.

On Monday, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope had said fresh lockdown is no answer to the rising cases of coronavirus in the state. However, the state government will impose stricter restictions, he added.
