Maharashtra's Amravati and Achalpur has announced to extend the lockdown till March 8 due to the sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in the district, Amravati District Collector said.

However, as shops selling essential commodities will be allowed to remain open during the curfew from 8 am to 3 pm, some people ventured out of their homes to re-stock the supplies. Meanwhile, Anjangaon Surji village has been declared a containment zone.

Maharashtra government had imposed a total lockdown of seven days in Amravati city and Achalpur town on February 21 owing to a large number of COVID-19 cases being reported from the two zones.

The state has been witnessing a surge in Covid-19 cases, as on Friday recorded more than 8,000 new infections for third consecutive day. Mumbai also saw spike in covid cases as it reported 1,000 new cases.

Maharashtra's Covid-19 tally is the highest in the country, followed by that of Kerala. Amid the rising cases, CM Uddhav Thackeray has appealed to citizens to strictly follow covid rules and wear mask.
