Dattatray Jagtap, director of secondary and higher secondary education in Maharashtra on Tuesday said that the state is considering to promote students from class I to VIII based on their yearly academic performance without conducting final exams.

Jagtap added that continuous and comprehensive evaluation during the academic year will be considered to assess students in view of the rising Covid-19 cases and lockdown in many cities across the state.

He further said there is a no-fail policy for standards I to VIII which will continue and grades will be alloted to student on the basis of how they fared throughout the year.

Schools in the state had decided to shut around March 2020 due to COVID-19 induced lockdown.Following the lockdown schools were shifted to the online mode of teaching. Many private schools decided to promote students based on their performance during the year.

“With the situation still uncertain and the academic year coming to an end, we are doubtful if offline classes or exams for all classes would be possible. We are also waiting for government instructions on Covid restrictions which are getting stricter by the day with a spike in cases. Hence, in most likelihood, exams may not happen and students will be promoted,” Jagtap said.
