As the demand for oxygen is increasing, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has now taken the initiative to produce oxygen on its own. Accordingly, a total of 16 oxygen plants will be set up in 12 civic hospitals in the coming months. A total of 43 metric tonnes of oxygen will be created every day by generating oxygen from the air.

This will be a great relief to Covid patients in Mumbai. The second wave of corona has increased the number of patients in need of oxygen. Amid spiralling coronavirus cases in the country, the demand for medical oxygen has gone through the roof.

However, due to the limitations of the capacity of oxygen producers and transporters and the limitations of infrastructure in the field of oxygen production, supply and transportation, the state government and the municipal administration are working hard to balance supply and demand.

Mumbai is also facing hortage of oxygen supply in the city due to which many patients are suffering. Due to shortage of oxygen many private and municipal hospitals are turning down admission of patients.

The shortage has put a strain on the municipality and the medical system, Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal took the decision to set up oxygen plants in civic hospitals. These projects can run for a minimum of 15 years to a maximum of 30 years. The total cost is expected to be around Rs 90 crore. The rate of oxygen produced from this plant is the same as the rate of liquid oxygen per cubic meter.

Maharashtra is the worst affected state in the country as it is reporting the highest number of cases across the country.
