The Maharashtra government wanted to cancel final year examinations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maharashtra Cabinet Minister and Yuva Sena President Aditya Thackeray had moved the Supreme Court to challenge the UGC decision to hold final-year examinations before September 30.

However, the Thackeray government and Yuvasena have suffered a major setback after the Supreme Court ruled that states are required to conduct final year exams as per UGC guidelines and for any exemption, they will have to seek permission.

Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court regarding the final examination.

The rejection of the petition filed by Yuva Sena and the state government in the Supreme Court today will only benefit our students, said Fadnavis.

He also said that the degree of the students will have "value" in the future. Fadnavis was speaking to reporters after the inauguration of Covid Hospital in Balewadi in Pune.

Fadnavis said that all the vice-chancellors in the country were of the view that a degree could not be awarded without examination, the committee of vice-chancellors also recommended the same.

The apex court today agreed that the exams should be held but the dates could be postponed.
