The Maharashtra government has extended the deadline for installing High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, till June 30, 2026, state Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced. The HSRP plates will become mandatory from July 1, 2026, for all older vehicles across the state. Earlier, the deadline for installing number plates was December 31, 2025.
The state government decided to grant an extension after reviewing the progress of HSRP installation work and to avoid inconvenience to vehicle owners.
Transport Minister said that the high-security number plates are an important mechanism to curb vehicle theft, prevent fake registration plates and stop the misuse of vehicles in criminal activities. The move has been implemented in accordance with guidelines issued by the central government.
Vehicle owners have been advised to visit the official transport department website and book appointments in advance for installation. The minister clarified that the process must be completed before June 30, 2026.
According to the reports, special inspection drives would begin across Maharashtra from July 1, 2026, to verify compliance. Vehicles without HSRP plates or without registered appointments may face action under the Motor Vehicles Act. Violators could also be fined up to Rs 1,000 as a compounding fee.
The transport minister urged citizens to register only through the official portal and avoid unauthorised agents or middlemen.
