Two weeks after local trains were opened for all, Mumbai reported a jump in the count of fresh Covid-19 cases on Monday.

Kishori Pednekar, Mumbai Mayor on Tuesday reacted to the surge in COVID cases in city. She said,"It's a matter of concern. Most people travelling in trains don't wear masks. People must take precautions else we'd head towards another lockdown. Whether lockdown will be implemented again, is in the hands of people."

The local train services in Mumbai, which were hit due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, resumed for the general public from February 1. Since then, the number of patients has risen again in the last two weeks.

In January, an average of 300 to 350 patients a day were registered in Mumbai. This number has now reached 650.

While talking to reporters, Additional Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (Health) Suresh Kakan had said, “Since the local train services resumed, we are keeping a close watch and for the next 15 days we are going to remain cautious.” As this period is coming to an end on 21st February, BMC will review the number of patients.

After asking Kakani about the local train situation he said, the number of corona patients will continue to increase by 10-20%. However, if the review conducted after February 22 shows a large increase in the number of patients, a different decision will be taken regarding the local trains.

Additional Commissioner Suresh Kakani clarified that decision will be taken in consultation with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. However, if the number of patients is low, further relaxation can be decided, he said.
