Maharashtra: Against the backdrop of rising temperatures across the state, the Health Department is closely monitoring the number of patients suffering from heatstroke. A total of 55 heatstroke cases have been recorded so far; of these, 38 patients were identified during the period from March 1 to April 26. Seventeen cases were recorded during the months of January and February. Although two deaths were reported during this same period, the Health Department has expressed reservations regarding these fatalities, as the exact cause of death has not yet been conclusively established. According to a report by the Health Department, a total of 382,725 patients sought treatment for various ailments across the Outpatient Departments (OPD), Pediatric Departments, and Emergency Departments of government hospitals throughout the state. The data indicates that the patient count was relatively higher in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation area, as well as in the districts of Thane, Palghar, Pune, Nagpur, and Chandrapur.
District-wise statistics reveal that Nandurbar district recorded the highest number of cases, with 14 patients identified. This was followed by Nashik with 6 cases; Gadchiroli and Ratnagiri with 4 cases each; and Ahilyanagar with 3 cases. Two cases each were recorded in Raigad, Pune, Palghar, Jalna, Gondia, Buldhana, Chandrapur, and Dhule; while one case each was identified in the districts of Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Jalgaon, Parbhani, Sindhudurg, Solapur, and Thane. Meanwhile, in view of the potential risks, special ‘Heatstroke Wards’ have been established in all District and Sub-District hospitals across the state. Additionally, beds have been reserved for patients in rural hospitals and health centers operated by local self-government bodies. Arrangements have also been made to ensure the availability of necessary medicines and intravenous fluids to facilitate immediate treatment in emergency situations.

Although heatstroke typically begins with mild symptoms, it can prove to be a severe condition if timely medical treatment is not administered. Its primary symptoms include elevated body temperature, headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, dry and hot skin, rapid heartbeat, and, in some instances, loss of consciousness. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat, dehydration, and working outdoors during the scorching midday sun are considered the leading causes of heatstroke. Consequently, the Health Department has urged citizens to avoid venturing out between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, consume plenty of water and fluids, and ensure their heads are adequately protected.
