The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings of heavy rains in Mumbai and suburbs on Saturday.

A yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai and Thane while Orange alert is in place for the neighbouring Palghar and Raigad for Saturday.

The Santacruz observatory in western suburbs recorded 85.4mm rainfall since 24 hours night ending 8.30am on Saturday while the Colaba observatory in south Mumbai recorded 108 mm rain during the same period, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

"Due to a well marked low pressure system over Madhya Pradesh and low level wind convergence over North Western region, North Konkan is very likely to receive heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places, including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad for 24 hours. Intensity will reduce later," said KS Hosalikar, deputy director, western region, IMD.

Last year, the city received 3,695.6mm rainfall in the full monsoon season from June to October 14.
