A few days ago, BJP state president MLA Chandrakant Patil had said that some big leaders of the Maratha community do not want Maratha reservation.

“The MVA did not want the reservation. Which senior leader of theirs paid attention to the matter? Did Uddhav ji or Sharad Pawar pay attention?” Patil had asked.

Former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has now replied to Chandrakant Patil's statement. Prithviraj Chavan responded to Chandrakant Patil's comment saying that if our Maratha leaders did not want reservation, the leaders in the cabinet would not have passed the ordinance.

Chavan said Chandrakant Patil's statement on Maratha reservation does not need to be taken seriously, as it is laughable.

On September 9, the Supreme Court had directed that no quota would be granted to the people of the Maratha community in education and jobs in the state this year and deferred the hearing on a batch of plea challenging the constitutional validity of a Maharashtra law granting Maratha reservation in education and jobs to a larger bench.

After Supreme Court' stay on the quota, the BJP leader is constantly criticizing the Mahavikas Aghadi government. It is alleged that the state government has failed to present its case in the Supreme Court regarding Maratha reservation.

On 25 June, 2014, the then Congress-NCP government under then chief minister Prithviraj Chavan had announced 16 percent reservation for Marathas and 5 percent quota for Muslims.
