The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has delivered its best-ever performance in the Vasai–Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) elections, winning 43 of the 115 seats, its highest tally in the civic body to date. The result marks a significant expansion of the BJP’s footprint in a region long dominated by the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA). While the BVA retained control of the civic body by securing a clear majority with 71 seats, the BJP emerged as the second-largest party, consolidating its position as the principal challenger in Vasai–Virar. Other political parties failed to make a notable impact, with the Shiv Sena (UBT) managing to win just one seat.
The contrast is stark when compared to the 2015 VVMC elections, where the BVA had swept 106 out of 115 seats, leaving little room for opposition. The 2026 results indicate a shift in the local political landscape, with the BJP making substantial gains and registering steady growth in a traditional BVA stronghold. Ahead of the counting, an exit poll released by VMJ (Virar Majhi Jaan) had projected a comfortable majority for the BVA in the 115-member civic body. The survey had estimated that the BVA could secure around 82 seats, well above the majority mark of 58, indicating a strong return to power. The Mahayuti alliance—comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), and its allies—was projected to win 29 seats, while Shiv Sena (UBT) was expected to secure just two seats. Other parties and independents were predicted to collectively win two seats.
