Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Tuesday asked people to celebrate Gudi Padwa, which marks the beginning of New Year in the state, indoors due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said, “People should raise “gudi” in their respective homes if they want. But coming out on the street and taking procession of celebrations is strictly prohibited.”

This is how Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and his son Parth offer prayers at their residence on Gudi Padwa.

Gudi Padwa marks the traditional Maharashtrian new year. The day is celebrated on the first day of the month of Chaitra according to the Hindu calendar. The festival, which is considered as one of the major Marathi festivals, is also known as Ugadi in Telugu and Yugadi in Kannada.
