A 39-year-old worker hailing from Gujarat was beaten to death allegedly by his colleague at a private steel company in south Mumbai in the early hours of Monday, November 17. The incident took place between 1 am and 1.30 am at Sentec Coated Steels Pvt Ltd in Girgaon.

The deceased was identified by police as Ramesh Hajaji Chaudhary, a resident of Banaskantha in adjoining Gujarat. The accused, Suraj Sanjay Mandal (22), who stayed and worked in the same premises, assaulted Chaudhary with a wooden stool and a fire extinguisher, leading to his on-the-spot death, the official told the news agency PTI.

According to police sources, a trivial argument broke out between the two late on Sunday night. In a fit of rage, Suraj allegedly attacked Ramesh with a wooden stool and later with fire-fighting equipment, leaving him severely injured and bleeding profusely. Local residents informed the V.P. Road Police, who rushed to the scene and shifted the injured man to a nearby government hospital. Doctors declared him dead.

Following a preliminary inquiry, the police confirmed Suraj Mandal’s involvement and registered an FIR for murder. He escaped from the spot immediately after the assault, and multiple teams from the police and Crime Branch have launched a manhunt to trace him.

Initial investigations reveal that the deceased, Ramesh Choudhary, hailed from Bhataram village in Dhanora, Banaskantha district of Gujarat, and had been working in Girgaum for the past few years. The accused, Suraj Mandal, is a native of Bihar, and officers suspect he may attempt to flee to his home state. Teams are being deployed to apprehend him before he leaves Maharashtra.

However, what triggered the murderous attack was still not known. A case of murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered against the accused and the VP Road Police arrested the accused and are investigating the motive.
