Amid rising cases of road accidents in Maharashtra, the Mumbai Traffic police have intensified their crackdown on individuals driving under the influence of alcohol. On Sunday alone, police took strict action against 22 people caught for drunk driving.

According to officials, the Mumbai Traffic Police has initiated proceedings to cancel the driving licences of those caught, and First Information Reports (FIRs) have also been registered against them.

Speaking on the matter, Joint Commissioner of Traffic, Anil Kumbhare, said, “Road accidents have become a serious issue. This situation must be controlled, and that is the reason behind this strict action.”

The traffic police have chalked out a detailed action plan to penalise drunk drivers. As per the new directive, offenders will not only face monetary fines but also cancellation of their licences and legal proceedings under relevant sections. The department has expressed hope that such stern action will lead to a reduction in road accidents.

Among the 22 individuals apprehended on Sunday were Ankush Salunkhe, Umang Thakur, Jayesh Mandwal, Gaurav Malkoti, Santosh Gawde, Abhishek Dubey, Aniket Ambrale, and others. All of them are being prosecuted under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police officials further informed that after the FIRs are registered, notices are sent to the drivers. The matter is then taken up in court, where a decision is made on whether to impose fines or award punishment.

The primary objective of this drive, authorities said, is to curb accidents caused by drunk driving and ensure the safety of common citizens on the roads.
