A founder from Mumbai recently drew attention after recounting an interview experience that underscored the value of honesty in recruitment. The incident revolved around a job applicant whose candid admission about being dismissed from his previous role nearly jeopardised his chances of selection. However, what initially seemed like a disadvantage eventually turned into the defining factor behind his hiring. The episode has since sparked conversations around the importance of self-awareness, accountability, and transparency during interviews, especially at a time when candidates often try to present only their strengths while avoiding discussions around past setbacks or professional failures.
Apurva Jain, the founder of Wizarding Media, shared details of the interaction, recalling how the candidate openly acknowledged his termination within the first few minutes of the discussion. Without attempting to soften the narrative or shift blame, the applicant clearly explained the circumstances that led to his exit, the mistakes he had made, and the steps he had taken to improve himself. Jain admitted that his initial instinct was to cut the conversation short. However, the candidate’s straightforward and composed explanation prompted him to reconsider and listen more attentively to what he had to say.

During the conversation, Jain observed that the applicant refrained entirely from blaming external factors such as his manager, workplace environment, or team dynamics. Rather than rejecting the applicant outright, Jain decided to assign him a trial project to better evaluate his capabilities. Reflecting on the experience, Jain emphasised that the candidate’s willingness to openly discuss his failure, which could have been perceived as a weakness, ultimately became his greatest strength.
