Mumbai: Key Vakola to BKC Elevated Corridor Likely to Open in April, MMRDA Revises Timeline

Mumbai is witnessing a slew of road and flyover projects aimed at easing traffic congestion across major routes. Among these, the elevated road connecting Vakola to the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) stands out as a key infrastructure initiative. This corridor forms a crucial part of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension and is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between the city’s eastern and western suburbs. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had initially targeted late March for opening the road to traffic, but officials now confirm a minor delay due to pending technical work on the project.

A vital girder installation remains incomplete near the Western Express Highway in the Vakola area, reported News18, citing sources. The alignment here is curved, requiring extra caution during placement to ensure safety and structural integrity. To facilitate this work, authorities plan to implement a temporary traffic block in the vicinity. This careful approach is necessary to avoid any mishaps and ensure quality construction. As a result, the timeline for the project’s completion has been revised, with the opening now expected in April. Officials emphasize that this short delay will ensure the corridor meets all safety and operational standards before it is opened to the public.

The elevated road connecting Vakola and BKC spans approximately 1.2 kilometres and is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 645 crore. Designed with two lanes on each side, the corridor aims to streamline traffic flow in both directions. Once operational, it will link several key junctions, including Vakola Junction, Ambedkar Chowk, University Junction, and the Bandra-Kurla Complex, providing motorists with a faster and more convenient travel option. Urban planners anticipate that this new route will significantly reduce commute times, ease congestion on existing roads, and improve overall connectivity across Mumbai’s busy suburban network.
