Mumbai Local Train: Virar–Dahanu Upgrade Paves Way for 15-Coach Services
Major strides have been achieved in the Virar–Dahanu Road railway line quadrupling project, marking a key upgrade in Mumbai’s suburban rail infrastructure. The Western Railway in collaboration with Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation has successfully enhanced platforms 3A and 4A. Their width has been increased from 6.5 metres to 10.5 metres, while their length has been extended to accommodate 15-coach local trains instead of the earlier 12-coach capacity. This transformation is expected to significantly boost operational efficiency and passenger handling at one of the busiest stations along the western suburban corridor.
Officials confirmed that the entire upgrade was completed within a record span of four months, highlighting efficient planning and execution despite continuous train operations. Additionally, a new platform, numbered 5A, has been constructed on the western side of the station to manage rising commuter volumes more effectively. A successful trial run of an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train was conducted on April 5, indicating readiness for expanded services. Once formally handed over, the upgraded infrastructure will allow the introduction of 15-coach train services, improving frequency, easing congestion, and enhancing overall commuter convenience.

These infrastructure improvements are expected to significantly increase passenger-carrying capacity and make daily travel more comfortable for thousands of commuters. The Virar–Dahanu Road quadrupling initiative forms a crucial part of the long-term strategy to strengthen Mumbai’s suburban railway network and support future urban expansion. According to MRVC CMD Vilas Wadekar, all work is being executed with a strong focus on safety while ensuring minimal disruption to existing services, achieved through close coordination with Western Railway authorities.
