The Mumbai Traffic Police have launched a special operation against motorists illegally installing red, blue, or yellow flashing “dome lights” on private and unauthorized vehicles across the city.

During an intensive two-day drive conducted on April 1 and 2, 2026, officials took action against 80 such vehicles found violating traffic norms. Police also seized dome lights fitted on these vehicles along with three unauthorized sirens.

According to officials, several private vehicle owners install such flashing lights on their cars to falsely portray themselves as VIPs and gain undue advantage in traffic congestion. This not only disrupts traffic discipline but also creates confusion among the public and on-duty police personnel.

Taking serious note of the issue, the traffic police carried out inspections across the city under the supervision of Assistant Commissioners of Police from South Central, Marine Drive, and Bandra traffic divisions. Strict penal action has been initiated against the offenders under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Authorities have warned that repeat violations will attract heavier penalties. In serious cases, the police may recommend cancellation of the vehicle’s registration to the Regional Transport Office (RTO). Additionally, legal cases may also be registered if required.

The Mumbai Traffic Police have appealed to citizens not to install any unauthorized flashing lights or sirens on their vehicles. They also urged the public to report such violations by sharing photographs of offending vehicles on the official Mumbai Police ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) handle or via the traffic helpline.
