Mumbai, Feb 4 2026: Traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway halted for over 8-hours with long queues of vehicles, including four-wheelers and heavy trucks, that were stranded on Tuesday evening (February 3), and it continued till Wednesday morning (February 4). The bumper-to-bumper jam occurred due to an accident near the tunnel.

Mumbai Pune Expressway Gas Tanker Overturned

A gas tanker overturned near the Adoshi tunnel on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, according to the news agency PTI. The accident occurred when a tanker-truck was travelling at a high speed, lost control due to slop and suddenly overturned. However, no casualties were reported in the incident.

The tanker was carrying propylene gas, which is highly flammable. As a precautionary measure, the police immediately closed traffic towards Mumbai to prevent any untoward incident, according to PTI. This has created long queues of vehicles along the expressway.

By late evening on Tuesday, the expressway was turned into a parking lot, and massive vehicles were stranded on the road for several kilometres. Many were stuck till midnight without any clarity on the movement of vehicles. Passengers travelling in state transport and Shivneri buses reported being stuck since the evening.

Emergency services, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and traffic police were deployed at the accident expressway. Vehicle cleared operations are still underway due to the highly inflammable and heavy nature of the gas.

The traffic jam was reported for over 25 km in some lanes of the expressway, particularly near Khandala and Khopoli, forcing commuters to spend the night in their vehicles and on the roadside.
