The much-awaited Mumbai–Konkan water transport project is set to commence operations on March 1, Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane announced, describing it as a flagship initiative envisioned by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Highlighting the background of the initiative, Rane explained that the concept was originally proposed between 2014 and 2019, during Fadnavis’s earlier tenure as Chief Minister, when he also oversaw the ports department. Preliminary planning and groundwork had begun in that period, laying the foundation for water-based connectivity projects. However, with Fadnavis now in his third term as Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the administration has renewed its commitment and expedited the execution process. Strengthening inland and coastal water transport infrastructure has emerged as a strategic priority for the state government’s long-term mobility and development agenda.

Under the first phase, ferry services will connect Mumbai to Vijaydurg along the scenic Konkan coastline. Additionally, a Roll-on Roll-off facility is planned between Mumbai and Alibaug via Vijaydurg, enabling both passengers and vehicles to travel conveniently by sea. Authorities have indicated that subsequent stages will extend services to Ratnagiri, Raigad and other coastal districts. The broader objective is to build an integrated maritime transport corridor that eases pressure on busy highways, cuts down travel duration and provides a smoother commuting experience across Maharashtra’s western shoreline.
The state government expects the waterway venture to significantly strengthen tourism across the Konkan region, famous for its pristine beaches, historic forts and vibrant local culture. Enhanced marine connectivity is anticipated to attract more visitors while also stimulating business activity in coastal towns. Officials believe the project will create employment opportunities in ferry management, hospitality services and related industries. Rane expressed confidence that the initiative will not only improve transport efficiency but also act as a catalyst for economic growth, positioning coastal Maharashtra as a thriving hub for tourism and trade.
