A 72-year-old woman died in Mumbai's Goregaon area on Sunday, March 23, after a fire broke out in a 24-storey building. The incident occurred at around 7.30 pm in a flat located on the sixth floor of a residential building, Lakshachandi Heights, situated in Gokuldham on Krishna Vatika marge in Goregaon East.
The deceased has been identified as Indu Singh. The fire broke out due to a lamp in the house where Indu and her house-made present were. When the blaze erupted, both managed to escape the room. However, Indu decided to go back inside, and she sneaked into the burning house and could not get out due to the smoke.
After inhaling the poisonous smoke from the burning, she collapsed near the door in the flat. She was given first aid and then transported to the hospital. However, the doctors at Lifeline Hospital declared her dead.

At the time of the fire incident, deceased Indu Singh's husband, Tarkeshwar Singh, was on an evening walk in the building compound. After the fire broke out, Singh and others reached the house and managed to take out the house-help and Indu out of the house. But Indu went back inside the smoke-filled house for some reason and could not come out.
"The building had a functional firefighting system, but the sprinklers were outside the flats and not within, as the building was built before 2005," Singh added.
