Mumbai: A young woman, aged 23, allegedly died by suicide after jumping from a running train in South Mumbai on April 13, officials said. Following the jump deceased Disha Chauhan was rushed to GT hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. As per the FPJ reports the incident occurred in the early hours. She jumped from the train before it reached Charni road station.
Victim's mother Rekha reported a complaint against deceased husband and family for abetment of suicide. Police has registered case under section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The complainant alleged that Disha was victim of mental and physical harassment by her husband since 2023. They allegedly demanded money and forced her to arrange funds for his drug consumption.
The complainant stated she regularly provided financial assistance to her daughter and son-in-law to prevent further harassment, but the abuse continued. The FIR indicated the victim had previously attempted suicide and consumed phenyl following alleged harassment, requiring hospitalization. A non-cognizable complaint had also been previously registered against the husband.
Police reported that the couple was seen consuming alcohol near Marine Lines the night before the incident, during which the victim expressed her intention to end her life. The accused allegedly refused to stop her and later told police he did not intervene when she jumped from the train.
The complainant has also accused the victim’s in-laws of supporting the harassment. Further investigation is underway.
