Nagpur Violence: Mumbai on High Alert, Security Tightened Across City

Mumbai, Maharashtra (March 18, 2025): Following the violence in Nagpur, Mumbai Police have stepped up security measures across the city. Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Satyanarayan Chaudhary confirmed that security arrangements have been tightened. "All processions in the city have ended peacefully. Patrolling and bandobast are in place," he said.

Violence erupted in Nagpur on Monday after a protest over Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb. The protest, organized by Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, called for the immediate removal of the tomb. During the demonstration, an effigy of Aurangzeb was burned, and posters were torn. The protest heightened tensions in the Mahal area, which later escalated into violent clashes between two groups. There are also reports that the violence erupted after rumours of burning of holy book spread in the area.

Police responded quickly to contain the situation and restore order. A combing operation was conducted in the Mahal area, and Section 144 was imposed to prevent further unrest. More than 20 people have been detained in connection with the violence. Police are reviewing CCTV footage and other available video clips to identify the culprits, and an FIR is being processed. Police have urged residents to avoid stepping out unnecessarily and not to take the law into their own hands.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed for peace and urged residents to cooperate with the authorities. "The manner in which the situation became tense in Mahal area of Nagpur is highly condemnable. A few people pelted stones, even at the Police. This is wrong. I am keeping an eye on the situation. I have told the Police Commissioner to take whatever strict steps are necessary to maintain law and order. If someone riots or pelts stones at Police or creates tensions in society, strict action should be taken against all such people. I appeal to everyone to behave to ensure that the peace of Nagpur is not disturbed. If someone attempts to create tension, very strict action will be taken against them," Maharashtra CM said.
