Mumbai Metro Line 9 is likely to open for commuters in the second week of February 2026. Formally an extension of the existing Red Line 7 with a 13.58-kilometre corridor, filled the gap between the suburban outskirts of Mira-Bhayander and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSIA). By integrating elevated and underground sections, the line aims to slash travel times by up to 75%, providing a much-needed alternative to the heavily congested Western Express Highway in Mumbai's suburbs.

Metro Line 9 is designed as a dual-ended extension of Line 7. To the north, it extends the track from Dahisar East to Mira Bhayander, while to the south, the 7A segment connects Andheri (East) directly to the Mumbai International Airport.

The project has over 13.58 kilometres, with a predominantly elevated structure covering 11.38 kilometres. However, to facilitate direct access to the airport terminals, a 2.19-kilometre underground stretch has been engineered. Once operational, the line will feature 10 strategically placed stations, linking residential hubs to vital commercial and government centres.

Who Will Benefit From Mumbai Metro Line 9?

For residents of Mira Road and Bhayander, who currently rely on limited bus services or congested road routes, the metro is expected to reduce travel times to the airport and suburban business districts by more than half.

The primary advantage of Line 9 is its role as a "connector" within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). It offers seamless interchange facilities with several existing and upcoming transit networks:

Western Railway: Providing relief to the overcrowded local train services.

Metro Line 2A: Connecting Dahisar to D.N. Nagar.

Metro Line 7: Extending the current Andheri-Dahisar corridor.

Western Express Highway (WEH): Offering a high-speed rail alternative to road commuters.
