Andhra Pradesh: YSRCP MLA Kannababu slams govt officials over frequent fire accidents in SEZ

Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 30 : Taking note of the frequent fire accidents in the Special Economic Zone here, ruling party MLA Kannababu on Friday said that the lack of safety audits by the fire department is the root cause of such incidents.

A fresh incident was reported earlier in the day in the Special Economic Zone, where seven workers were severely injured and admitted to hospital after a fire broke out in a private pharmaceutical lab in Atchutapuram Industrial Special Economic Zone, in the Anakapalli locality of Visakhapatnam. However, officials later said that two people died out of the injured persons.

The YSRCP MLA Kannababu Raju said that due to the lack of safety audits in the pharma companies, frequent accidents are reported in SEZ. "It's the fifth incident in the last six months this year," he said.

Alleging dereliction by government officials, Kannababu said, "Even officials of the government are not checking the companies properly and giving permission to pharma companies. I won't leave this issue here. I will settle this issue in front of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy."

According to the Superintendent of Police, Anakapalli Murali Krishna, Friday's fire incident was caused due to a sudden reactor blast.

"A reactor explosion was reported in a private Pharma lab in Anakapalli. In the blast, two persons received severe burning injuries and were shifted to a hospital for treatment. A case will be registered and an investigation will be carried out on how the incident took place and whether there is any negligence from the management," Anakapalli SP Murali Krishna said.
