Bengal polls: BJP bike rally attacked by miscreants in Dantan
Kolkata, April 21 On the last day of campaigning for the first phase of the Assembly polls, a Bharatiya Janata Party procession was attacked in Dantan, West Midnapore district.
It is alleged that a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate was attacked in the incident. There were multiple injuries.
As the condition of one person is critical, he has been admitted to a hospital in Balasore, Odisha.
A large police force arrived at the scene and dealt with the situation.
It has been learnt that on Tuesday, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Ajit Kumar Jana was out campaigning in the Dantan Assembly constituency. A bike rally was organised from Haripur. It is alleged that the rally was attacked on its way from Sabra to Mohanpur.
As soon as the rally reached the Antala area, miscreants attacked. The procession was attacked with sharp weapons and sticks.
In addition to vandalising the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate's car, the bikes of the workers and supporters were also attacked.
Several bikes were set on fire. It is alleged that the miscreants affiliated with the Trinamool Congress carried out this attack.
Not only that, it is alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Ajit Kumar Jana sustained injuries in one of his hands in the attack. Several other Bharatiya Janata Party workers were also injured.
Each of them was rescued and taken to a local hospital. One of them was taken to a hospital in Balasore, as his condition was critical. He is reportedly undergoing treatment there.
Tension has spread across the area following the incident. Bharatiya Janata Party workers and supporters blocked the Egra-Solpatta state highway in front of Mohanpur police station to mark their protest. They demanded the arrest of the miscreants.
A large police force arrived at the scene. They spoke to the protesters and brought the situation under control. The police have started an investigation into the incident.
However, the local Trinamool Congress leadership has denied the allegations. No one has been arrested in connection with the incident so far, the police said.
