India rose to the 11th spot among countries with the highest number of reported COVID-19 cases going past China's official count on Friday as new infections from across the country remained higher than 3,500 for the sixth day in succession. States reported a total of 3,787 new cases, taking India’s tally to 85,786. China, from where the virus originated, has officially reported 84,031 cases. The day’s death toll was 105, back in three digits after to 99 on Thursday.

Maharashtra, with 1,576 fresh infections, continued to lead the numbers, followed by Tamil Nadu (434), Delhi (425), Gujarat (340) and Rajasthan (213).  India’s fatality rate was 3.23%, compared to the global death rate of 6.92%; the recovery rate was 34.06%, according to the latest figures released by the Union health ministry. Experts say that a national lockdown imposed in India on March 25 to slow the spread of the disease appeared to have been effective in slowing the infections.  China imposed a 76-day lockdown earlier this year in Wuhan, the city where the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen is believed to have jumped to humans. India’s recovery rate improved to 33.6%, up from 32.83% on Wednesday.
