Srinagar, April 23 Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar district said on Thursday that they have arrested four overground workers (OGWs) for providing logistics support to the terrorists.
A senior police officer said the arrests were made from the Hazratbal area of Srinagar on Wednesday evening during a targeted operation.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Zahoor Ahmad Mir, Bashir Ahmad Bhat, Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, and Shazia Mohammad, all residents of Hazratbal.
“During the operation, a hand grenade, 15 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, four mobile phones, and some cash were recovered from their possession.
“Following the recovery, a case has been registered against them under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Arms Act, and further investigation has been initiated,” police said.
Police and security forces have been carrying out aggressive anti-terrorist operations across Jammu and Kashmir targeting terrorists, their overground workers (OGWs), sympathisers and those involved in drug smuggling and hawala money rackets.
The focus in the revised anti-terrorist operations is based on dismantling the entire support system of terrorism rather than just focusing on the gun-wielding terrorists alone.
The J&K Police and the security forces carry out anti-terrorist operations in the hinterland, while the Army and the Border Security Force (BSF) are deployed on the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border.
The LoC is situated in the Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts of the Valley and Poonch, Rajouri and partly in Jammu district of the Jammu division.
The International Border is situated in Samba, Kathua and Jammu districts of the Jammu division.
The Army and BSF are deployed to prevent infiltration, exfiltration, drug smuggling and drone activities initiated by terror outfits from the Pakistan side of the border.
These drones are used to drop payloads of arms, ammunition, cash and drugs for the terrorists. These payloads are picked up by the OGWs and then passed on to the terrorists to sustain terrorism in the union territory.
