The toll is likely to rise as search operations continue. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the situation and described it as grim. He said all available resources from within and outside the union territory were being mobilised for rescue work.

“The news is grim and accurate. Verified information from the area hit by the cloudburst is slow in arriving. All possible resources are being mobilised from within and beyond J&K to manage the rescue operations,” Abdullah posted on X.

The chief minister said he would not be speaking to TV channels or news agencies. “The government will share information as and when possible,” he added.

Chasoti is the last motorable village on the route to the Machail Mata shrine. The annual pilgrimage has been suspended after the disaster. Flash floods triggered by the cloudburst also hit Narang village. Horrifying visuals from the site showed broken roads, gushing water and extensive damage in the region.
