Motorists travelling on national highways and expressways across the country have an important update to note. Starting April 10, 2026, major changes will come into effect regarding toll collection rules. Under the revised system, cash payments at toll plazas will be completely discontinued, making digital payment methods mandatory for all vehicles. From tomorrow, all cash lanes at toll booths will be permanently shut. Any driver who does not possess a valid FASTag or lacks access to digital payment options will not be allowed to pass through toll plazas, ensuring a strict shift toward seamless electronic toll collection nationwide.

In addition to eliminating cash transactions, authorities are also introducing advanced tolling technology on several highways. A Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based system will be implemented, enabling toll charges to be calculated based on the exact distance travelled by a vehicle. This means commuters will no longer need to stop at toll plazas, as tolls will be automatically deducted in real time. However, strict enforcement measures will accompany these changes. Any motorist attempting to create disruptions at toll booths or insisting on cash payments may face penalties. Authorities will also have the power to blacklist such vehicles for repeated violations.

Vehicle owners have been advised to take necessary precautions before commencing their journeys. It is essential to ensure that their FASTag accounts are active and have sufficient balance to avoid inconvenience during travel. Those who have not yet installed FASTag on their vehicles are urged to do so immediately. Failing to comply with the new rules could result in significant travel disruptions from April 10 onward. These reforms aim to enhance efficiency, reduce congestion, and promote a fully digital toll collection system, making highway travel smoother and faster for everyone.
