Police in Srinagar launch crackdown on online secessionist content

Srinagar, April 30 The police in Srinagar on Thursday launched crackdown on online secessionist content aimed at disturbing peace and order, an official said.

Officials said that Srinagar Police have registered a case against certain individuals for dissemination of secessionist propaganda aimed at disturbing public peace and national integrity.

In a statement, the police said it acted on credible inputs regarding circulation and dissemination of content (videos) across Digital and Social Media platforms, promoting separatist ideology and propagating false information, with an intent to incite unlawful activities prejudicial to the Peace, Sovereignty and Integrity of India, Srinagar Police has registered a case against certain individuals in this matter.

Preliminary enquiry indicates that the circulation of such content is a deliberate attempt to propagate separatist and secessionist narratives through Digital platforms.

Such activities have the potential to incite Public Disaffection, disturb Public Order, and undermine National Integration.

"Prima facie, the information discloses the commission of cognizable offences punishable under Sections 152, 196(1), and 353(1)(b), (c), and (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Accordingly, FIR No. 11/2026 under the aforementioned sections has been registered at Cyber Police Station Srinagar, and investigation has been taken up. The general public is advised to refrain from creating, sharing, or circulating such unlawful content on Social Media and Digital platforms," the statement read.

"Any individual found involved in such activities will be dealt with strictly in accordance with law," it said.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police and the security forces have been carrying out aggressive anti-terrorist operations aimed at targeting the entire support system of terror. This includes operations against terrorists, their over ground workers (OGWs) and sympathisers.

Drug smugglers and those involved in hawala money rackets are also on the scanner of the security forces as it is believed that funds generated through these unlawful activities are used to sustain terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
