Puducherry Assembly Election 2026: Polling on April 9 for All 30 Seats, Counting of Votes on May 4
The Union Territory of Puducherry will hold elections for all 30 Assembly constituencies on April 9. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4 and will take place simultaneously with results from four other regions—Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Assam. The announcement was made by the Election Commission of India as part of the schedule for the upcoming round of Assembly elections. Political parties have begun preparations for campaigning, with the polling process expected to determine the next government in the Union Territory. The results will be declared after the completion of counting across all polling centres.
Speaking at a media briefing, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stated that voting for these elections will take place at approximately 2.19 lakh polling stations spread across the participating states and the Union Territory. Around 25 lakh election officials and security personnel will be deployed to oversee the process and maintain transparency. The election authorities have emphasised strict monitoring and logistical arrangements to ensure that polling is conducted smoothly. Measures have also been planned to safeguard the integrity of the democratic process, allowing voters to cast their ballots freely while maintaining proper administrative coordination across all polling locations.
The Chief Election Commissioner further highlighted the vast scale of the electorate participating in these elections. According to him, the combined number of voters in the four states and the Union Territory is comparable to the total population of several major countries, including Australia, France, South Africa, Germany and Canada. This comparison underlines the magnitude and complexity of conducting elections in India. Organising such a large-scale electoral exercise requires detailed planning, massive manpower and extensive infrastructure to ensure that every eligible voter gets an opportunity to participate in the democratic process without obstacles.
In Puducherry, the ruling coalition comprising the All India NR Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party will aim to retain power in the upcoming election. The alliance is expected to rely heavily on the leadership of Chief Minister N Rangasamy and the government’s welfare initiatives implemented during its tenure. These programmes and administrative decisions are likely to be central to the coalition’s campaign strategy as it seeks another term. Political observers anticipate that governance record and public welfare schemes will play a key role in shaping voter sentiment during the election campaign.
Meanwhile, the opposition bloc in the Union Territory has come together with the Indian National Congress contesting the election in alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Communist Party of India. The alliance hopes to challenge the ruling coalition by presenting a united front and focusing on local governance issues. Opposition leaders are expected to highlight policy differences, development concerns and alternative programmes for the Union Territory. Campaign activities are likely to intensify in the coming weeks as parties reach out to voters across constituencies to strengthen their electoral prospects ahead of polling day.
During the 2021 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election, the All India NR Congress emerged as the single largest party by securing 10 seats in the Assembly. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won six seats, while both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress also secured six seats each. The election witnessed a strong voter turnout of 84.8 percent, reflecting significant public participation. The results ultimately paved the way for the AINRC-BJP alliance to form the government in the Union Territory under the leadership of Chief Minister N Rangasamy.
Earlier, in the 2016 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election, the Indian National Congress secured victory by winning 15 seats in the Assembly. The All India NR Congress finished second with eight seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam captured four seats. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won two constituencies in that election. Voter turnout during the 2016 polls was recorded at 83.6 percent, indicating enthusiastic participation by the electorate and reflecting the importance of Assembly elections in shaping the political leadership of the Union Territory.
