India is currently dealing with a devastating second Covid-19 wave that has swept through the nation, crushing the country's health infrastructure and overburdening frontline medical workers. 

Newly-elected Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy tested Covid-19 positive on Sunday evening. He was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai. Rangasamy, who had tested negative a couple of days ago for the swearing-in ceremony, was tested again after showing symptoms and tested positive today.

A Health Department's spokesman in Puducherry confirmed that Rangasamy his reports were sent to Indira Gandhi Government Medical College Hospital and came back positive. The spokesman said that Rangasamy was stable and had preferred to get treatment at a private hospital in Chennai. He left for Chennai in the evening.

In wake of rising cases of COVID-19, Puducherry on Saturday announced a complete lockdown to contain the spread of the viral disease in the Union Territory.
