Shah calls for effective counter insurgency measures

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday emphasised on the need for restoration of peace and effective counter insurgency measures to deal with elements inimical to normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir.

On the second day of his two-day visit to the state, the BJP President co-chaired a meeting of the Unified Headquarters here along with J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik.

Unified Headquarters is the apex anti-militancy grid in the state. It comprises top officers of civil, military, paramilitary, state police and intelligence agencies.

Others who attended the meeting included Security Advisor to Governor K. Vijay Kumar, Chief Secretary B.V.R. Subrahmanyan, Northern Army Commander Lt General Ranbir Singh, Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh and senior officers of paramilitary forces and state and central intelligence agencies.

State BJP leaders, led J&K BJP President Ravinder Raina, also met Shah, who is on his maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir after assuming charge as the Home Minister.

Shah also met members of gram panchayats, a delegation of tribal Gujjars, members of the Bakarwal community affected by militancy and some youth deputations.

Earlier, the Home Minister visited the family of slain local police officer Arshad Khan and offered condolences.

Arshad Khan was critically injured on June 12 in a suicide terror attack in Anantnag district. He was shifted to AIIMS Delhi where he succumbed to his injuries on June 16.

Five CRPF troopers and one fidayeen terrorist were killed in that attack.
