Uttar Pradesh Storm Tragedy: 89 Dead as Rain, Hailstorm, and Lightning Wreak Havoc Across State

A devastating spell of unseasonal weather wreaked havoc across Uttar Pradesh, leaving at least 89 people dead and dozens injured after strong winds, torrential rain, hailstorms, and lightning lashed several districts of the state. The severe storm uprooted trees and electric poles, damaged houses, and triggered multiple fatal accidents as walls and sheds collapsed in different regions. According to officials from the state Relief Commissioner’s office, many victims died due to lightning strikes, falling debris, and storm-related mishaps. Authorities also confirmed the loss of livestock and extensive property damage. The situation turned critical in many districts as emergency teams assessed the destruction caused by the sudden change in weather.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took immediate cognisance of the tragedy and directed all district administrations to provide relief and financial assistance to affected families within 24 hours. Officials were instructed to maintain direct communication with victims and ensure all possible support reached them promptly. The state government said the situation was being monitored continuously and funds were being released to districts for rescue and rehabilitation work. The Chief Minister also asked Revenue and Agriculture Department officials, along with insurance agencies, to conduct surveys of crop and property damage and submit detailed reports to the government for further action.

Several districts reported heavy casualties and widespread destruction after the violent storm swept through eastern and central Uttar Pradesh. Prayagraj recorded multiple deaths in areas including Handia, Phulpur, Soraon, Meja, and Sadar, while Bhadohi reported at least 16 fatalities linked to storm-related incidents. In Fatehpur, nine people lost their lives, and several others were injured after houses and walls collapsed during the heavy rain and windstorm. Authorities stated that women were among the worst-affected victims in some tehsils. In Pratapgarh, residents died after lightning strikes and collapsing cement sheds trapped people under debris during the intense weather conditions across rural regions.

In Kanpur Dehat, a 19-year-old woman died after lightning struck near a neem tree where she had taken shelter with goats during heavy rain. Several animals also died in the incident, while another man nearby sustained injuries. Separate lightning strike incidents in Deoria claimed the lives of two elderly residents and left others injured. In Sonbhadra district, a man was killed after a tree uprooted by strong winds collapsed on him during the storm. Officials stated that district administrations had begun collecting reports of human and livestock losses to ensure compensation and emergency support were distributed according to government guidelines without delay.

Meanwhile, a shocking incident from Bareilly highlighted the terrifying intensity of the storm. During a wedding ceremony, a young boy identified as Bhai Miyaan reportedly clung to the base of a tin shed as powerful winds ripped the entire structure from the ground and lifted him into the air along with it. Witnesses said the tin sheet crashed down moments later while the child remained airborne briefly before falling separately onto the ground. The boy suffered fractures in both his hands and legs and was rushed to hospital for treatment. The incident quickly drew attention on social media as visuals of the storm’s destruction spread online.
