West Bengal saw the change in governance as Mamata Banerjee party faces defeat in Assembly election. Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as the CM on Saturday May 9. Suvendu will be the first BJP CM of West Bengal after party's record win securing 207 seats. According to report he will be taking oath at 11 am.
Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda, and Dharmendra Pradhan, along with Tripura CM Manik Saha and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, arrived in Kolkata on Friday to attend the swearing-in ceremony, which several senior BJP leaders are expected to attend. Earlier on Friday, Home Minister Amit Shah announced Adhikari as the Leader of West Bengal BJP Legislative Party after a party meeting in Kolkata.
Suvendu Adhikari has been elected Leader of the West Bengal BJP Legislative Party, as announced by Shah. Following the announcement, Adhikari met Governor R N Ravi to formally stake his claim to form a BJP government in the state, accompanied by senior BJP leaders. Adhikari expressed his gratitude to BJP national president Nitin Nabin and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He told reporters that he was grateful for their support and the Prime Minister's blessings, emphasizing the democratic nature of the BJP and their commitment to fulfilling election promises.
BJP leader Agnimitra Paul praised Adhikari as an ideal choice for the position, highlighting his dedicated work within and outside the Assembly.Adhikari's victory in both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the 2026 elections, including a defeat of Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by over 15,000 votes, paved the way for the BJP securing 207 seats in the Assembly, ending the Trinamool Congress's 15-year rule and signaling a return to "Poriborton" in Bengal after 34 years of Left governance and 15 years of TMC rule.
